Eurovision winner 2009

Norway voted winner of Eurovision song contest Print E-mail
Image Norway and Alexander Rybak (23) were voted winners of the Eurovision Song Contest 2009, held in the Russian capital, Moscow Saturday evening. Singer and violinist Rybak received votes from all 42 nations and collected a record 387 points during the competition.

Iceland came second in the ESC competiton with 218 points, followed by Azerbaijan which took the third place with 207 points.

Sixteen nations gave Norway the top 12 points available.

Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and Culture Minister Trond Giske have sent their congratulations.

Alexander Rybak, who was born in the former Soviet Union, is already a well-known musician in Norway.

A classically-trained violinist and pianist, he also wrote his country's winning entry, "Fairytale".

The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) will host next year's ESC competition final in Oslo. This will be the third time Norway hosts an ESC final.
